THOROUGHLY MODERN HARDANGER:
DESIGN AND COLOR
Teacher: Shirley Kay Wolfersperger
Danger! Hardanger design goes where you never thought it could go. This
course will stretch your creativity, imagination, and skill. You will learn that
Hardanger does not always have to be traditional, monochromatic, and sym-
metrical. Hardanger can be in rainbow colors, asymmetrical design, on painted,
decorated, and nontraditional ground. It can be art. The foundation of the
course is based on the traditional Hardanger stitches, but with some research
and exploration, new ideas will flow. For the spirited and freewheeling, this
course is full of fun and challenge. Let the adventure begin!
LESSON 1. A review and exploration of published sources for traditional
American and classical Norwegian Hardanger. Student will plan and execute
small original pieces in both styles.
LESSON 2. The basics of designing nontraditional Hardanger are the centerpiece
of this lesson, including the rules of Hardanger and how to break them. The
student continues research on Hardanger with a short written assignment.
LESSON 3. The culmination of the two previous lessons is an opportunity to
design and execute an original nontraditional Hardanger work of art.
Prerequisites: Intermediate to advanced skill in Hardanger stitches
Time: Six months
Fee: $100.00
