Page 27 — 2007–2008 Education Catalog INDIVIDUAL CORRESPONDENCE COURSES: SIX AND NINE LESSON HUNGARIAN KALOCSA LACE II Teacher: Eniko Farkas This course is an introduction to handmade Kalocsa lace. Prerequisite is having the small sample and one of the large Kalocsa embroideries completed in the first Kalocsa embroidery course, since retired and no longer available. The embroideries should have been done on a 100 percent lightweight cotton fabric. The total dimension of the embroidery should be 15" x 16". This allows extra fabric for the lace edge. If you have not taken the first course but know how to do Kalocsa embroidery, confer with teacher before registering. LESSON 1. A brief history of needlemade lace concentrating on Italian, especially Venetian, needlelaces. Research assignment on needlelaces. You learn how to do eyelets and scalloped edging in buttonhole stitches. You will make small Old-Kalocsa lace. LESSON 2.  Discussion of Hungarian needlemade laces. A brief description of Halas lace. You learn about the elements of Kalocsa lace and how to stitch them. You will make a sampler of the needlelace stitches. LESSON 3. You will start to turn your Kalocsa embroidery into Kalocsa lace utilizing previously learned needlelace stitches. LESSON 4.  Start with Richelieu ground and the corner roses. Do research on the history of machine-made laces and write a one-paragraph essay on the subject. LESSON 5.  Discussion of aesthetic principles on how to design Kalocsa lace. Design your own Kalocsa lace, and work more on your large piece. Redesign a commercial pattern. LESSON 6.  Discussion on textile conservation and how to apply the prin- ciples to storing your Kalocsa lace. Start working on the outside edge and work more on the large Kalocsa piece. Turn in the large Kalocsa lace for final evaluation. This notebook course will give you tools and skills to connect your life experiences and interests to needlework-related research, writing, drawing, designing, and stitching. You will gain the confidence and ability to pursue personal stitchery design through drawing. We will focus on exploring your selected needlework method in the context of the original drawings you create, and personal connections, abilities, and knowledge you bring to the course. You will acquire and/or expand drawing, design and assessment skills, which will be introduced and practiced in small steps. You will create numerous drawings, as well as design and stitch at least two studies for each lesson. You will research and write about various subject matter used by artists in needlework and drawing. You will plan, design, and create a final product. In the comprehensive written assessment for the last lesson, you will reflect on the process of growth and learning you experienced throughout the course. LESSON 1. Your needlework history.
