LUCK OF THE IRISH GOLDEN SHAMROCK

This Golden Shamrock was inspired by the historic court costumes
of the Irish Ambassadors to the Court of St. James. Luxurious gold
embroidery like this represents the epitome of traditional English
embroidery. This course is designed for embroiderers who wish to
become more familiar with traditional and modern ways of
achieving this historic result.
LESSON 1. History, materials, tools, framing up, preparing the silk,
padding methods, gilding technique of invisible couching
LESSON 2. Gilding techniques of parallel laying, chipping, and
twisting over spangles
Project: A dimensional, framed piece with the effect of gold jewelry laid
on fabric
Size: Gold work is 3 1/2" long, 2 1/2" wide, and rises about 1/2" off the
surface
Fabric: Silk ground fabric 11" long x 8" wide
Threads: English metal purls: Pearl purl, check purl, smooth purl, wire
check purl, and spangles
Color: Gold or silver on green Dupioni silk
Skill level: Intermediate
Prerequisites: Intermediate-level embroiderer
Time: Four to five meetings within four months
Checkpoints: One intermediate checkpoint (shipping to instructor)
and one ½nal checkpoint (shipping) when work is complete. The
½rst checkpoint is optional

Teacher: Judy Jeroy
Stitch crewel embroidery with confidence while creating a graceful
floral design. Fifteen stitches are explored, including stem/outline,
chain, back stitch, buttonhole, fly, coral knot, spider, herringbone,
satin, feather, and long and short shading. The course is designed
for the advanced beginner in surface embroidery. History of the
technique is also given.
