Outreach
Outreach is any time a member or group of members go into the community and do “something” in the name of EGA.
This means everything from judging at the county fair to placing ornaments on a tree in a bank, library or other public place. It means teaching anyone interested in holding a needle and wanting to learn the needlearts. It is time spent at the museum or historical building doing conservation/restoration on their needlework collection. It is demonstrations in public places and making speeches to clubs, organizations, or groups. It is giving of your time to stitch samplers for Habitat for Humanity and Wee Care gowns and other items for hospitals and organizations. If you raise money, gather canned food items, toiletries and clothes, and donate them to a community organization, this is outreach. It can be almost anything, but an EGA chapter must sponsor it.
What is Outreach all about?
EGA outreach is all about promoting The Embroiderers’ Guild as an educational organization as well as developing an awareness of embroidery as an art form. EGA outreach exists at all three levels:
At the National level, our EGA President selects a recipient for funds generated through a national outreach project. In 2001-2003, the American Heart Association received revenue for women’s heart health research which resulted from sales of Charmed Heart and American Hearts. In 2004 - 2005 EGA members and chapters supported this effort by purchasing booklets of Heart of My Heart and My Beading Heart. The 2006 project was called Hearts.
One of the appointed positions at the National level is the National Outreach Chairman, who is responsible for keeping track of outreach activities of all thirteen regions of EGA. This is accomplished through reports sent to her from the Region Outreach Chairmen and also individual chapters. She also “gleans” this information from region and chapter newsletters sent to her and several times a year, an issue of “Gleanings” which reports all current activity is sent to each Region Outreach Chairman and is also included in the Presidents’ mailing from National Headquarters. She reports periodically to the National President and writes articles for each issue of Needle Arts.
At the REGION level, there is a region outreach chairman who acts as a liaison between all the chapters in her region and the National Outreach Chairman. It is her job to report chapter activities in her region newsletter and to the region board and to keep the National Outreach Chairman informed regarding outreach in her region. Many regions have an annual Share-A-Thon where chapters display items from their outreach efforts and bring patterns to share with other chapters.
At the CHAPTER level, ideally, every chapter has an outreach chairman who initiates projects and perhaps plans a program around a current outreach project. She reports at chapter meetings and in the chapter newsletter and keeps the Region Outreach Chairman informed about outreach activities in her chapter.
