Class Number: 201 Class Name: Blackwork Pheasants Teacher: Tanja Berlin Technique: Blackwork Proficiency Level: All Levels Kit Fee: $65
Students will learn to work blackwork embroidery from a selection of patterns rather than from a charted design. They will take patterns and work within the tacked outline of the design learning how to shade with different weights of thread and how to change patterns by adding or diminishing stitches within the pattern. Pearl Cotton #12, DMC floss, YLI silk thread and Kreinik Metallic Braids #4 will be used. Back and double-running stitches are used following a pattern and counting the linen threads. This embroidery is not worked as a two-sided piece. Instead, the class will concentrate on working the embroidery as a three-dimensional piece. Prior to class the student will transfer the design on to the 32-count fabric using tissue paper and tacking method.

A lovable little mouse and her dragonfly companion with raised gossamer wings, enhanced with beads and gold thread worked in DMC cotton on silk Dupioni. The students will perfect random long and short stitches and bullion knots and will learn an innovative padding technique.

Class Number: 203 Class Name: Needlepoint Wrist Garland Teacher: Debbie Deem Technique: Canvas Proficiency Level: Advanced Intermediate Kit Fee: $56
Garnish yourself! Needlepoint “BEAD” pillows are stitched on 24-count Congress creating six different focal elements for this wrap-around wrist garland. Each “fiber bead” – about one inch square – combines counted and free-form composite stitches that weave and layer threads, ribbons, attachments, and other materials into jewel-like treasures using techniques that elevate the dimension. Traditional and modern finishing choices will be explored along with three methods of stringing and alternative uses.

Class Number: 204 Class Name: Lemon Trees, Very Pretty Teacher: Patty Smith Gardner Technique: Punchneedle Embroidery Proficiency Level: Intermediate Kit Fee: $60
Punchneedle embroidery has made a huge comeback. This class will explore the exciting new dimensions in this technique. This pretty tree is the easy way to garden by using a variety of fibers, such as silk ribbon, novelty yarn, silk and cotton floss, varying the depth of the loops and strands used. The foliage is created with variegated silk ribbons and twisted silk forms the trunk of the tree. The lemons are shaded with differing shades of floss. The kit will include the punchneedle with all the required needle sizes and a special embroidery hoop.

Class Number: 205 Class Name: Good Grief – Another Leaf! Teacher: Barbara Jackson Technique: Crewel Proficiency Level: All levels Kit Fee: $39
This is a great opportunity to make a notebook in crewel embroidery techniques. This class will create a handy reference source for future stitch and thread choices. Each stitch will have a dedicated page on which basic stitch construction is presented, along with notes concerning potential problems and hints on attaining perfection. Students will work with a variety of leaf motifs to personally stitch a sample that will be attached to the page. Combo leaves that have more than one stitch will also be examined. This will give the students a chance to not only work with stitches, but also to try a variety of threads and see the resulting leaf.

Class Number: 206 Class Name: The Color of Seasons Teacher: Catherine Jordan Technique: Fabric Painting/Surface Embroidery Proficiency Level: Intermediate Kit Fee: $65
Explore the wonderful color changes of the seasons as we study the exciting possibilities of fabric painted backgrounds and landscapes. Students will be introduced to the use of fabric paints with surface embroidery. The projects are four 2” rounds which can be finished as lapel pins, pendants, or pin keeps. Overdyed cotton floss will be used to enhance the beautifully painted backgrounds. This is a great introduction to adding color to your work with four small projects which are easily finished.

It is summer with acres of vineyards gracefully climbing the rolling golden hills. Anticipate a taste of nature’s bounty interpreted in canvas embroidery using an interesting variety of silk, hand-dyed cotton and wool threads. Learn special techniques for creating a cluster of wrapped bead “grapes” with stumpwork leaves to add a dimensional motif. Explore “line” as a design element using selected stitches that give a realistic illusion of perspective to this lovely green and gold hillside patchwork scene.

Class Number: 208 Class Name: Bamboo Fan: A Study in Rozashi Teacher: Margaret Kinsey Technique: Rozashi Proficiency Level: All Levels Kit Fee: $70
The basis of our study is a stalk of bamboo on a partially opened fan.. Bamboo is a revered image that is found throughout Japanese art, and in almost every aspect of daily life. It is steeped in symbolism as well as utilitarian. It symbolizes long life. It is used as food, utensils, flooring, fences and in gardens. The threads used are silk, a mixed thread also named brocade, and metallic threads. The stitches in this study are: ni dan straight, step, and double step, san dan, line stitch and the irregular stitch. The kit comes complete with a special needle, ro attached to frame, all threads, nori sticking paste, and instruction booklet with color image.

Class Number: 209 Class Name: Techniques in Schwalm Teacher: Phyllis Maurer Technique: Schwalm Whitework Proficiency Level: Intermediate Kit Fee: $42
This class is a study of traditional Schwalm embroidery, a form of whitework typical for a region in Germany. The project features a traditional design and uses traditional materials – imported linen and broder threads. A variety of surface stitches and needleweaving fillings will be used. The design can be worked as shown or varied by the student’s choice of filling stitches. A brief discussion of the characteristics of German embroidery will be presented. Class Number: 210 Class Name: ENCORE Lace Buttons Teacher: Nancy Nehring Technique: Needleweaving Proficiency Level: All Levels Kit Fee: $30
Complete eight different handmade buttons in class: Singleton, star shirtwaist, Dorset, double soutache ring, checkerboard soutache, Victorian flag, morning star and evening star. Techniques include sewing, wrapping, needleweaving and embroidery using fabric, thread, braid and cord. There will be discussion on how to make entire families of buttons from each sample. Instructional material will be Nancy’s book: 50 Heirloom Buttons to Make. Bring the book to class if you have it although it is not required. No other instructional material will be handed out. Kits contain all the materials for two to five of each button, make one of each in class. Gripping strength and the ability to work with small objects is required.

A non-charted design created with sheer and opaque fabrics, silk ombre ribbons, metallic threads, floss, novelty threads, beads, and stumpwork. Students will make the decisions for the placement of stitches and colors. This piece allows the student to experience the use of a wide variety of media. Techniques demonstrated include the application of fabrics, overstitching fabrics with threads and beads, and a heavy emphasis will be on creating a color scheme that demonstrates cast shadows and perspective with the use of threads, metallics, beads and fabrics.

Bracelets Galore is a blend of four unique beading stitches offered in four bracelets. The romantic three strand spiral stitch, a delightful flower stitch project, an encrusted herringbone bracelet and twisted armlet were designed to teach students spiral, flower, herringbone and Dutch twist stitches in an easy to learn format. The kit will include needles, bobbins of thread, Delica and seed beads as well as crystal and accent beads and three different sterling silver closures. Complete instructions including finishing are provided.

Class Number: 213 Class Name: Judging Needle Art Teacher: Pat Rozendal Technique: NA Proficiency Level: All Levels Kit Fee: $40
The focus of this class is to train you to recognize the best in the needle arts. Learn what to look for when evaluating needlework in an exhibit or reviewing your own work. We will cover the criteria that judges use, talk about dealing with show committees and both read and write judge’s statements and critiques. We will have a rare opportunity to visit EGA’s Nineteenth National Exhibit as well as the education exhibit and discuss both.

Welcome to Studio Time – an opportunity to work on some of those pieces that you really do want to complete. It will be interesting to see what each of you is working on. Marion will be there to answer questions or help find solutions for your problems. Feel free to contact Marion before seminar with any questions - she may be able to do some research ahead of time. Even though there will be some socializing and fun, we will also be concentrating on our unfinished pieces and have some companionable stitching time together.

Class Number: 215 Class Name: Golden Party Bracelet Teacher: Carolyn Sherman Technique: Beading Proficiency Level: Advanced Intermediate Kit Fee: $70
Students will stitch a colorful bracelet that will be the hit of the party. The checkered background of black and white seed beads will be stitched first. To the background will be added three-dimensional flowers, peyote stitch leaves and several delightful fringes. One flower will be made from spiraled netting, one from coiled loops and one from herringbone petals and bead embroidery. This is an excellent class for experienced beaders to experiment with some unique detached techniques.

Class Number: 216 Class Name: Intermediate Japanese Temari Teacher: Barbara Suess Technique: Japanese Temari Proficiency Level: Intermediate Kit Fee: $35
Imagine floating on a boat at night under a clear, moonless sky. Maritime Stars, with its black-as-night background, swirling blue water, and glowing stars is a combination 8-division Japanese temari ball inspired by the sea at night. Stitch a bouquet of six different chrysanthemums bordered by trefoil-stitched leaves on Kiku Sampler. This temari is a study of variations of the unique kiku herringbone stitch. In the class you will learn a combination of 8-division, swirl stitch, kiku herringbone, trefoil stitch and many tips and techniques for making the perfect Japanese temari ball.

Class Number: 217 Class Name: Lucy’s Pocket Teacher: Carolyn Standing Webb Technique: Pulled Thread/Surface Embroidery Proficiency Level: Beginner to Intermediate Kit Fee: $45
Lucy of the childhood nursery rhyme may have lost her pocket but you will treasure the one that you create using white thread on colored linen. This lovely floral spray is finished as either a bag or a pocket and is worked on 30-count linen with stranded cotton and several sizes of pearl cotton. You will have several color choices of linen. It uses 10 different pulled thread stitches including stair step, framed cross, diagonal cross, four-sided and window filling. The surface is embellished with chain, whipped outline, and blanket stitch. Pattern darning, fly and satin stitch add finishing touches to a delightful accessory that will help you master pulled thread stitching. You will also learn how to finish both the bag and the pocket as you learn about how pockets were used historically.
