Class Number: 301 Class Name: Pygmy Ow Teacher: Tanja Berlin Technique: Needle Painting Proficiency Level: All Levels Kit Fee: $55
In this class the student will work an owl on a fir branch using a single strand of floss to execute long and short stitches. This is an intriguing technique, using DMC floss as your paints on a closely woven fabric to create a realistic picture. Other techniques will include starting and finishing threads, the use of split stitch line and working the design as a three-dimensional piece. Other stitches used are split, stem and satin. Emphasis will be on blending long and short to shade beautifully and on how to position stitches so that they lay smoothly.

Class Number: 302 Class Name: Sweet Peas Teacher: Deanna Bertelsen Technique: Stumpwork/Needle Painting Proficiency Level: Basic Intermediate Kit Fee: $40
An elegant twist of Sweet Peas together with their own attendant “bugs” in raised, three-dimensional Stumpwork. The students will use needle painting techniques to shade the petals and leaves. The sweet smell of summer includes a profiled bee and a gilded spider together with wrapped tendrils, heavy blossoms and beaded seed pods.

Class Number: 303 Class Name: Wacky Trees on Art Cards Teacher: Debbie Deem Technique: Canvas Proficiency Level: Intermediate Kit Fee: $58
Create a landscape of weird and wacky trees using felt shapes on your choice of canvas ground – either 18- or 24-count. Formatted as four artist trading cards, students will design paper templates and experiment with stitch selections to fill the sky and ground. Surface embroidery flows all about this little fractured forest – so let’s go wild and let our needles wander. Cards may be cut out, backing applied, signed and dated – ready for trading or finished into a needlebook.

Class Number: 304 Class Name: Gorgeous Gardenia Teacher: Patty Smith Gardner Technique: Punchneedle Embroidery Proficiency Level: Intermediate Kit Fee: $60
This class will explore an exciting new dimension to punchneedle embroidery – “punching out of the box”. By using a variety of fibers such as silk ribbon, novelty yarn, silk and cotton floss, and varying the depth of the loops and the number of strands used we will make a luxurious three-dimensional topiary. Silk ribbons in a combination of punched techniques form the gardenia. The blue and white Chinese cachepot is punched with one strand of floss in the miniature Russian method. The trunk of the tree is done with matte silk strands that are twisted and twined together. The kit will include the punchneedle with all the needed needle sizes and a special hoop.

Class Number: 305 Class Name: An Abundance of Berries and Buds Teacher: Barbara Jackson Technique: Crewel Proficiency Level: All Levels Kit Fee: $39
It’s time to re-evaluate all those wonderful stitches associated with this historic medium and unleash the creative potential within your needle! Traditional crewel designs abound with buds, berries, blossoms and other “small bits.” But what stitch and thread to use? In this class you will develop a notebook to use as a valuable reference source. Each stitch will have a dedicated page on which basic stitch construction is presented along with many notes concerning possible problems and helpful hints. Students will work with a variety of motifs to personally stitch a sample that will be attached to the page. This class will give you a chance to experiment not only with stitches, but with the many threads now available for crewel embroidery.

Class Number: 306 Class Name: Introduction to Fabric Painting Teacher: Catherine Jordan Technique: Fabric Painting/Surface Embroidery Proficiency Level: Intermediate Kit Fee: $50
This class is an introduction to fabric painting which is a fast and easy method of expanding a composition’s color palette and making your work more interesting and eye catching! Counted and surface embroidery stitches worked in overdyed cotton floss add to the color experience with accents and texture. The project is finished with a four-sided finished edge and mounted invisibly (without glue) to a papier mache (3” x 3”) box which will be painted in class. A special surprise hides in the box with another painted landscape and saying repeating the colors and motifs on the top of the box. Two finishing methods for the separate landscapes will be covered. . Students do not need to know anything about color or painting to create this unique design.

Stand on the bank of Monet’s lily pond where surrounding tall trees and a wisteria entwined bridge are reflected in the quiet water. On this spring day, the cloudy Normandy skies create a green watery atmosphere. Silk threads capture the richness of this lovely scene interpreted in canvas embroidery. Explore a diverse palette of green hues, a selection of stitches and thread blending technique using many thread combinations, create the many colors of the realistic pond reflection.

Class Number: 308 Class Name: Fleur de Lis: A Study in Metal Thread Embroidery Teacher: Margaret Kinsey Technique: Silk and Metal Proficiency Level: Intermediate Kit Fee: $75
Fleur de Lis is an ancient symbol used to signify countries, states and cities. In the US, New Orleans and Louisville use the symbol while Florence, Italy is symbolized by a fleur de lis. Its symbolism is much older than Medieval times, because it can be found on Greek, Roman and Celtic coinage as well as in Assyrian ornamentation. This fleur de lis is worked in gold threads using 3 weights of pearl purl, also check, rough and smooth purls, #5 Japan thread, check thread #5, Elizabethan twist, and silk couching thread. The piece is worked on azure blue silk fabric. The foundation material is cotton. The techniques are: couching techniques, padding with felt, attaching purls with such techniques as chipping, outline/stem and diagonal satin stitch. Elizabethan twist is used in diagonal satin stitch.

Class Number: 309 Class Name: Ukrainian Band Pillow Teacher: Phyllis Maurer Technique: Ethnic Embroidery Proficiency Level: Intermediate Kit Fee: $50
Ukrainian Nyzynka is a colorful embroidery technique originating in the Carpathian Mountains. Bright colorful bands featuring traditional colors and designs have been used for this project. The student will learn how to stitch this technique, factors to consider before combining multiple design bands in a single project and how to complete the stitching for an open-ended band. Class Number: 310 Class Name: ENCORE Fancy Frogs Teacher: Nancy Nehring Technique: Needleweaving Proficiency Level: All Levels Kit Fee: $25
Complete eight different handmade frogs in this class: flat weave, fishes, double spiral, straight, double knot, three leaf, palmate and Chinese snail. Learn to make Chinese ball button and toggle button. No previous experience is needed, but gripping strength and the ability to work with small objects is required. Instructional material for all classes is Nancy’s book: 50 Heirloom Buttons to Make. Bring the book to class if you have it, although it is not required. No other instructional material will be handed out. Kit contains material for one of each frog.

Class Number: 311 Class Name: The Faerie of the Color Wheel Teacher: Lynn Payette Technique: Mixed Media Proficiency Level: Basic Intermediate Kit Fee: $52.50
A non-charted design created with sheer and opaque fabrics, netting, silk ribbons, metallic threads, floss, beads, and novelty yarn. This project allows the student to experience the use of a wide variety of media, and will have a heavy emphasis on creating a color wheel with the use of threads, metallics, beads and fabrics. Choices for the placement of the stitches and media will be encouraged. Techniques taught include application and layering of fabrics to create the colors in the wheel, working with metallics, beads, wirework for her wings, and a stumpwork “slip” to create the face (pre-drawn) and arms.

Class Number: 312 Class Name: Expresso Au Lait Teacher: Deanna Powell Technique: Beading Proficiency Level: Intermediate Kit Fee: $87
This necklace project offers the student the opportunity to learn the herringbone stitch. Emphasis will be on adding a tigeriron oval, heart bead and making tiny beaded beads as the necklace is constructed. Student will learn to work with spacers and attach a toggle and bar to finish the Expresso Au Lait necklace.

Welcome to Studio Time – an opportunity to work on some of those pieces that you really do want to complete. It will be interesting to see what each of you is working on. Marion will be there to answer questions or help find solutions for your problems. Feel free to contact Marion before seminar with any questions - she may be able to do some research ahead of time. Even though there will be some socializing and fun, we will also be concentrating on our unfinished pieces and have some companionable stitching time together.

Class Number: 314 Class Name: Anniversary Corsage/Necklace Teacher: Carolyn Sherman Technique: Beading Proficiency Level: Basic to Intermediate Kit Fee: $70
Students will stitch a lovely golden corsage/necklace. The flower petals will be sculpted from Delicas and seed beads with a decreasing peyote stitch. The corsage will be stitched to a fabric foundation that is edged with a golden picot stitch. The flower is embellished with blue crystals and several unique curly fringes. The back of the corsage has an attachment that converts the pin into a pendant. Cobalt beads and gold plated Swarovski crystals will be strung for a necklace. Students will leave class with two pieces of jewelry that can be worn three different ways. Students should be familiar with the peyote stitch.

Who is your “Mema”? She’s a Grandmother, Gran, Grannie, or Gram – that loving lady who spoils children, fattens you with your favorite food and is a shining star teaching you life’s lessons. Created for Barbara’s mother, Betty Blanton, this temari will challenge you with its marking process. However, after that, stitching the stars is not hard to do.

Class Number: 316 Class Name: To Be or Not To Be Teacher: Carolyn Standing Webb Technique: Drawn/ Pulled Thread/Goldwork Proficiency Level: Intermediate Kit Fee: $65
This wonderful gold silk band sampler stitched on 30-count cream linen is waiting for you to decide what it is going to be. Will it be a band sampler, a bell pull or even a bag? It could be any of these things. Three shades of gold silk thread are used to work the pulled and drawn thread bands. Unique techniques of hemstitching draw the linen threads into patterns and several different ways to finish the edges of the drawn thread bands will be taught. Lacis squares are filled with woven stitches. The pulled thread fantasy flower features eight different patterns and the coral stitch, stem and satin stitch trim the edges. Metal thread is used to add sparkle in bands that include ladder, chain and plaited braid stitches. All of these bands are enclosed in a hemstitched edge. Techniques for finishing the sampler as a bag will be included. The goal is to help the student become familiar with drawn and pulled thread stitches.

Everyone knows some one with a “Heart of Gold” and this piece would be perfect for the “special” person. The center of this lovely goldwork heart has a place for an initial or monogram. It is stitched on pink Congress cloth and the student will learn many techniques in metal thread embroidery including chipping, padding, couching and much more.
