Bring back memories of your childhood while you stitch a sheet of paper dolls. The Victorian doll and her wardrobe use many stumpwork techniques, including needlelace, appliqué, wrapped wire and card, padded satin, and a needlepoint slip of silk gauze. Each sheet will be unique as students add their favorite mementos to accessorize.

In this class you will be unraveling Tudor stitches, while making a purse. The Tudor period produced fascinating and intricate stitchery in silks and metal threads. This course offers a structured approach and in depth research into some of these stitches. Students will start a personal reference book of stitched samples and contemporary design sources. Following this, students will select a design to embroider on a Tudor style purse (sweet bag) complete with finger-braided purse strings and tassels.

Focusing on European embroiderers from 850 to ca.1450, especially English Opus Anglicanum, a reference notebook will be stitched. Setting the historical context through political, religious, family, other arts and extant museum embroideries, helps the students understand the medieval embroiderer’s life. Discussions of thread manufacturers, guild systems and women’s contributions are included. Sample stitches include underside couching, stitching face and hair, laidwork, backgrounds and known familiar stitches using threads similar to medieval embroiderers.

Celebrate your love of samplers, your family, and you by stitching this class sampler that you will personalize. The class will focus on a sampler genre that honors, celebrates and mourns the family and its roots. We will explore the early samplers discovering the multiple ways of personal expression used by the embroiderer. The class sampler, 10” X 16”, provides many opportunities to add your religious and ethnic roots, to honor your relatives, friends and pets and to include your favorite saying. The sampler is stitched on 34-count Devonshire cream linen using a variety of silk threads.

An abundance of diverse and intriguing pulled thread stitches are effectively blended into a fascinating combination to produce a beautiful and elegant cushion sampler. The center and border surrounding the pulled thread design are embellished with the earliest technique in the Hedebo period dated around 1700. This very attractive Hedebo counted thread flat stitch – Taellesynging/Platvaerk technique is further enhanced by the addition of the exquisite roseground buttonhole edge. Students will be working on their own individual cushion sampler, together with a doodle cloth, enabling them to explore each step and the direction of every stitch of this fascinating technique. The skills and techniques acquired will enable them to complete Mormor’s (Grandmother’s) cushion sampler at their leisure and in their own time after the course.

Do you want to play with some everyday art materials and create some marvelous designs of embroidery? In designing, the essential elements are line, shape, color and texture. Ideas for original designs are developed by “looking and seeing” these elements in a new way then placing them in a composition. A series of exercises will guide you into looking and seeing innovative combinations of these elements and lead you into combining them in creative compositions. You will leave the workshop with unique designs ready to embroider when you return home!

Celebrate the four seasons by creating a spectacular sewing box. Each side of this box represents one of the seasons. The top is the abundance of summer – raspberries are ripe and a cute field mouse is trying to decide which berry to pick. Spring shows the migration of warblers and the appearance of the early daffodil. Autumn shows a bountiful harvest of pumpkins, grapes and colorful leaves. Evergreen and mistletoe accent winter’s Christmas rose and snowdrops. The inside is outfitted with pockets, a pincushion, and needlepages. Class time will concentrate on the flowers, warbler and mouse. Emphasis will be placed on the use of soft shading, padding, wire, the slips and finishing techniques.

Enjoy this opportunity to stitch beautiful crewel embroidery in a vehicle that is versatile as well as useful! Graceful flowers are placed on the three sides and top of the box, worked in Appleton crewel wools on linen twill. After stitching the embroidery, complete instructions for the finishing and construction of the triangle box will be discussed. Construction samples will be worked by the students to prepare them for completing the project at home. In addition, students will be able to stitch and construct a scissors case, a pin cushion, a thimble pocket, and a needle book, each with a miniaturized design version.

In this four-day workshop, we will stitch on 28-count Quaker cloth with DMC Coton a Broder to create this beautiful flower. We will learn and experiment with sixteen filling stitches from seven different categories: satin, eyelets, wave, diagonal, double backstitches, composite and miscellaneous. Some pre-work of outlining will be required and a choice of outline stitches will be provided.

Are you baffled about what to do with that damaged old lace and whitework? Repair and restore, or take it apart? Anyone with basic needle-and-thread skills can learn to apply those in creative new ways to give too-good-to-throw-away fragments a totally new life. Students will learn to analyze damaged pieces, determine what can and should be repaired and bring them back to useful service. Teacher will supply a variety of damaged laces for students to practice basic mending, rescue and recycling techniques. Students are encouraged to bring their own damaged lace and lacy linens to repair in class, to evaluate for later repair, or to dismantle and design a project to reuse the material. Vintage makeovers and repaired pieces will be available for hands-on study. Required text: Anybody Can Mend Lace and Linens by Elizabeth Kurella. Those who already own the text are asked to bring it to class. Others can purchase the text.

This class is designed to teach you to confidently select threads and stitches for painted canvases. Your classroom assignment is to take one painted canvas out of your stash and move it from impossible to possible during this fast-paced lecture and demonstration class. Learn about threads and their uses, and choose threads that will enhance your canvas. Learn about stitches, where they work, and how to manipulate them. At the end of the class, you will have created a unique stitch guide. All you will need to add is time to finish a wonderful piece!

Long, lean and luscious – hang this beauty over your shoulder and go anywhere in style. Tortoise shapes will be worked on silver canvas with size 15 seed beads on the Intermission (beaded) side; in French silk on the Intermezzo (canvas) side. The crowning glory is the flap worked on a beading loom in an artistic mixture of platinum, white gold and yellow gold delicas. The exquisite fringe is silver-lined crystal bugle beads with Swarovski crystals. Loom not included.

Class Number: 413 Class Name: Medici Vase Teacher: Vima Micheli Technique: Casalguidi Proficiency Level: All Levels Kit Fee: $30
The design was inspired by the exquisite Italian embroidery known as Casalguidi. Vima visits regularly the small town of Casalguidi near Florence. The students will learn the basic techniques of this embroidery, both traditional and non-traditional approaches, and its history. Vima will show many of her antique pieces for study and inspiration. The Casalguidi band, padded Venetian cloth stitch and raised cording are some of the techniques used in the design. The embroidery will be on 18-count canvas with perle #5 and the students will have a choice of the color canvas and cotton thread. Pre-stitching of the design outline with the backstitch is required before class. The kit fee is for the instructions only – students are to bring their own canvas and fibers.

This design includes 24 different patterns using numerous silks, metallics, beads, patterns over lace and decorative accessories all surrounded by beaded borders. Carefully view the center patterns and you will see twelve patterns done in their own set of colors. The twelve triangle border patterns are composed of these previously stitched patterns repeated using the colors from another of the diamond patterns. What an amazing effect! You will enjoy the experience of how color and thread choice changes a pattern dramatically especially when opulent colors of burgundy, champagne, burnished golds, ginger, tourmaline and blue bell are the color palette. Renaissance – a needleart revival of color and textured glory done as a celebration of our 50 years of education and enjoyment.

Did you know that the symbol of the city of Louisville is the fleur de lys, the flower of the lily? The fleur de lys is the symbol of King Louis of France, for whom Louisville was named. In honor of the 50th anniversary of EGA, here is a lovely golden lily, constructed of gold bullion over silk. The dimensional embroidery is worked in traditional raised English goldwork, utilizing several types of gold bullion. A graceful frame of gold worked to simulate a wreath of grasses balances the design. Types of gold include pearl purl, bright check purl, wire check purl, smooth purl, and spangles. Techniques include several methods of attaching the gold bullion so that the stitches are invisible.

A Hundred Flowers incorporates spots of at least a hundred abstract and representational flowers illustrating the poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay. The techniques include traditional needlepoint, surface stitches and composites, drawn thread and cutwork in Soie d’Alger, overdyed silk, Kreinik braid, floss and pearl cotton. The ground fabric is white congress cloth.

Vincent Van Gogh spent some time in the south of France and there he became enamored of the abundant sunflowers that grew about his home. He captured the essence of the bloom and also its beauty. His portrayals never cease to fascinate the viewer and have become a most well known image in the world. Tribute to Vincent is Gail’s interpretation of this theme. It is a study in analogous colors, and a sampler of raised techniques to effect texture. Spectacular flowers are worked in Japanese flat silk, in detached needleweaving, in bullions and in traditional canvaswork stitches.

Golden gossamer roses celebrate the 50th anniversary of EGA: A rose for each decade and the three fruits (rose hips) of preservation for the past, educating for the future and fellowship of the present. This golden three-dimensional bouquet dances on a rich silk background. Using metallic, silk organza and lamé fabrics with silk and metal threads, we will create an elegant bouquet. Three-dimensional ribbonwork combines with double-sided goldwork, fusing with stumpwork, couching techniques and appliqué are used to create the focal points. Except for the padded stems all roses, leaves and hips are three-dimensional. Student will have many choices in the background silk, stitch technique and material placement. Stretcher bars (three sets) at $15.00 are available from the teacher.

Blackwork is always black … or is it? This stunning etui is the product of a complete beginning course in blackwork embroidery. Students will have a choice of a navy or cranberry linen colorway, highlighted with gold touches to provide an elegant place for favorite stitching tools and accessories. Cindy will share some history of the technique illustrated with photos and descriptions while teaching the most common stitches. Students will learn about reversible and non-reversible stitches, among them, Holbein or double running, split, back, stem, Algerian eye, reversible cross, two-sided cross, Montenegrin and Smyrna cross. This course is a study of needlework during its most glorious period of development – England from the 16th century through the early 18th century, the Tudor and Stuart periods. You will learn from lectures, slide presentations, a 175-page illustrated, spiral bound book, and experimentation with the techniques of blackwork, canvas, silk and metal, Florentine, crewel, sampler, stumpwork and whitework executed in their original form. This class has been opened to All Levels due to the primary focus of lectures and slides presentations. Consequently, some students may not be at a skill level to work all of the exercises.
