One-Day Class (Wednesday Only) September 3, 2008

Class Number: 501
Class Name: Long Stem Roses
Teacher: Jane Ellen Balzuweit
Technique: Needlelace
Proficiency Level: All Levels
Kit Fee: $35

Three needlelace stitches: corded, single and double Brussels will be taught to make roses that last forever. Heavy gage wire will form petals and stems. Silken pearl by “The Thread Gatherer” in shades of reds and greens will make these roses very elegant. Students should be able to complete a rose in class using an easy foundation which will be taught.

Class Number: 502
Class Name: Progressive Art Card
Teacher: Debbie Deem
Technique: Canvas
Proficiency Level: Basic Intermediate
Kit Fee: $16

The energy behind this Progressive Art Card alters the traditional ritual of trading finished artist cards into an interactive “round robin” adventure. Students will trade their projects during class allowing everyone to add stitches to their card. Starting with a simple matrix of tree branches, each card will travel to a new stitch post and inspiration to create texture. Embellishment will be provided in verbal, visual or musical clues. The motto is: “Work fast, think free, have fun.”

Class Number: 503
Class Name: Introduction to Punchneedle. The Basics and Beyond
Teacher: Patty Smith Gardner
Technique: Punchneedle
Proficiency Level: Basic
Kit Fee: $45

Have you been intrigued by punchneedle embroidery? This technique creates a lush, thick textured surface. It is easy, fast and very addictive. The first half of the class will be devoted to learning all about how to begin, how to use different needles and settings and trying lots of fibers. You will begin to fill your notebook with your test pieces. You will learn to transfer designs to fabric and experiment with filling stitches, outlining and making your final product just perfect. The second part of the class will put your newly formed expertise to the test by making a couple of bottle cap pins. The kit will include a special hoop and an excellent beginner punchneedle set.

Class Number: 504
Class Name: Berries for You!
Teacher: Barbara Jackson
Technique: Crewel
Proficiency Level: Basic to Advanced
Kit Fee: $29

This sweet little case features springtime strawberries and cornflowers worked in crewel stitches that give fantastic results. The secret is careful color manipulation and the illusion of serious shading. Long and short, satin, trellis and closed fly stitches will be used. The threads are unusual: Heathway Merino from England, Gloriana’s variegated Lorikeet wool, Pearsall’s silks and the wonderful silk/wool combination threads from Gumnut. Both the novice and the experienced stitcher will have a fun, relaxed time as they try out the many threads that are now available for crewel embroidery.

Class Number: 505
Class Name: Nifty Neckbands
Teacher: Joyce Lukomski
Technique: Beading
Proficiency Level: All Levels
Kit Fee: $55

What a difference a handsome neckband can make to the total presentation of a beaded necklace or bag! Some of these are so lovely that they are sensational even when worn alone without additional adornment. This workshop will give written instructions plus hands-on demonstrations for working peyote over a satin cord, Ndebele chains, Dutch spiral and others. We will also learn how to cover clasps for necklace extenders and ideas to achieve professional finishing results.

Class Number: 506
Class Name: ENCORE Designer Buttons
Teacher: Nancy Nehring
Technique: Needleweaving
Proficiency Level: All Levels
Kit Fee: $15

Complete four different handmade buttons in class: silk bar, Victorian star, leek, and soutache crossroads. Technique includes: wrapping, needleweaving and embroidery using thread, braid and cord. There will be discussion in class on how to make entire families of buttons from each sample made in class. Gripping strength and ability to work with small objects is required. Instructional material for all classes is Nancy’s book: 50 Heirloom Buttons to Make. Bring the book to class if you have it, but it is not required. No other instructional material will be handed out. Kits contain all the material for two of each button, make one of each in class.

Class Number: 507
Class Name: PinPal Pin/Pendant
Teacher: Lynn Payette
Technique: Mixed Media
Proficiency Level: Basic Intermediate
Kit Fee: $28.50

A whimsical pin or pendant worked on silk dupioni with interesting techniques for working with opaque and metallic fabrics, beads and metallic threads and braids, as well as a fool-proof finishing method. Emphasis is on the use of stitching and design lines to create an interesting “dress” and beaded areas. Students will join the completed components together using wire strung with beads. The face is pre-drawn on muslin, and the hair (student’s choice) may be beaded wire, metallic thread, flosses, or a combination of these. Student will furnish own neck chain, if a pendant is desired.

Class Number: 508
Class Name: Redwork Friendship Sampler
Teacher: Gay Ann Rogers
Technique: Canvas
Proficiency Level: Basic to Intermediate
Kit Fee: $30

Friendship is illustrated by three panels of 1920’s style crinoline ladies picking flowers, having tea and stitching. All in a single color, the sampler includes cross stitch composites, double-running stitch and several traditional needlepoint stitches and composites. The kit fee is for instructions only, the students provide their own materials.

Class Number: 509
Class Name: Fifty Golden Leaves
Teacher: Carolyn Sherman
Technique: Beading
Proficiency Level: Basic Intermediate
Kit Fee: $50

Students will practice two-drop peyote stitch as a charted “EGA” band is constructed with Delica beads for the sides of the tin container. The band will be embellished with tiny gold beads and beaded leaf fringes. A counted beadwork “50” will be embroidered on felt and edged with a beaded picot stitch for the top of the tin. This will make a lovely memento of Seminar 2008. The kit will include the breath mint tin.
