We have a needlework sampler (not a family heirloom) that we were about to donate to a silent auction. I was going to price it at $150, but then I went on the internet and found that some of these things are worth far more. I think ours is an average example. It was created by Martha Southwick in Dublin, Ireland in 1836. Is there an appraiser nearby? We live in Laurel, MD.

This looks very interesting. I think it would get more response if it were posted in the yahoo group and a picture also put there.

Sorry, I don't know what it is either.

I'm quite pleased to see EGA using a blog. Once more members become comfortable with it, I think it will have great potential of spreading the word on announcements, etc., more quickly than the regular channels. I'm definitely adding it to my blogroll!

I have a similar piece, gold on blue velvet. A long rectangle that was used as an altar cloth. Perhaps the piece you showed had been used in a church.

My guess is that it is a curtain valance from a Victorian era home. It could also be a theatre fall--part of the main curtain. Another possibility is the drop from a Victorian era table covering.

Wish I could see the embroidery closer.
