What’s a blog?

Welcome to the EGA Blog!

Some of you may be familiar with blogs but for those who aren’t, here is an introduction:

The word “blog” is short for web log, which is like a diary or bulletin board viewed on a website.  Individuals, businesses, institutions, and organizations use blogs to share news and information with visitors to their websites.  In addition to text; illustrations, photographs, and video can be shared.  Entries are displayed in reverse chronological order (newest at the top) and are labeled with one or more categories so that a viewer may easily find all the entries on a particular subject.  Readers may leave their comments or questions after each entry.

We’ll be posting breaking news here as well as information on exhibits, classes, and events so check back often!

Cool! I get to leave the very first comment on the new EGA blog! There are relatively few needlework blogs out there in the blogosphere, but a number of the better ones are run by EGA members. Any plans to add a blogroll for EGA member blogs?

Thanks for the comments! A blogroll is a great suggestion, Elaine, it’s on our list of things to think about!

The first thing you need to think about is adding an RSS feed, bloglines couldn’t find one.

Hey, Brad… know you’re working on the RSS (since there’s a RSS link for this comment thread)… I’ll be patient. Glad to know there will be an official location for announcements and information! Welcome, EGA, to the world of bloggers!

Just want to say I am very impressed with all the recent “improvements” at EGA.
We really are coming up to speed in the 21st century and the people at HQ are to be commended. EGA is becoming a dynamic force in the public domain – many more people are learning we are out there, and I hope we can increase our membership tenfold!

Very cool! I am not very good at checking blogs on a regular basis unless they are in my feed reader. Sounds like you are working on that issue now. And I really like the idea of the blogroll :)

Blogs are new to me…heard about them, read a few of my friends, but never participated. So, may not be the first to comment, but definitely my first time to write in a blog! Sounds like fun…will try to remember to check back and see what is going on.

Julie a blogroll is a list of blogs, generally in a sidebar of the page. Blogrolls are generally a collection of blogs with a related topic. The name of the blog in the blogroll is a hot link, so you click on it and go visit the linked blog.

Blogs are quickly becoming one of the most effective forms of stealth marketing. They are generally well indexed by search engines and enable businesses to find customers who are looking for the kind of information, service or product that the business sells. Of course, to be effective the blog must add real value.

The more thoroughly interlinked through blogrolls the various member blogs (and now EGA official blog) become, the more visible all the blogs become to someone searching on the net for infomration on needlework.

Sure, a blog makes a useful tool for internal communication. I don’t mean to discount that, but it is downright foolish to overlook the marketing potential as well.

Mine isn’t updated often, but I am a consumer law attorney; and I have used a blog with informaton on current consumer law issues for a variety of purposes — primarily improving my web page’s organic search result on Google. My url is: http://www.dowlinglawoffice.wordpress.com

I am so pleased to see pictures of the youth exhibit on this blog. Since returning from the Board of Director meetings earlier this month, I have been telling everyone about this wonderful work (as well as the Fiber Forum pieces) and now I can share them with friends and family!

    Thank you,
    Jenna

Excellent idea! This is a great way to spread the word of our existence. Too many people simply don’t know that there is such a thing as EGA. If it hadn’t been for a friend taking me to a meeting I would have been stuck in cross stitch world for the rest of my life.

not many people leaving messages on here. I hope they are not to shy or think no one is interested. Come on folks say something.

I’m quite pleased to see EGA using a blog. Once more members become comfortable with it, I think it will have great potential of spreading the word on announcements, etc., more quickly than the regular channels. I’m definitely adding it to my blogroll!
