Stitched with a variety of silks and cottons in shades of blue, pink, green, yellow, gray, red, and brown, this counted thread sampler features a floral border, quaint farm house, bee skeps, trees, and other rural delights along with the Shaker lyrics “Tis a Gift to be Simple.…” Stitches include chain, double backstitch, diagonal double backstitch, satin cushion, satin variations, petit point, cross over one, Smyrna, double Italian cross, long arm cross, diagonal cross, and detached buttonhole.

219 - My Flower Garden: Appliqued Accessory Box

This covered box, surrounded with brightly colored flowers, was inspired by an embroidered ribbon. The flowers are delicately appointed with beads and the box is large enough to house a purse, hairband and barrette accessories, or any embroidery smalls. Class includes dimensional appliqué techniques, such as the tack stitch and Deborah’s own needle slanting techniques and fabric manipulation methods. Box construction will be fully discussed. Students will learn the secrets of creating uniformity in surface work by stitching in a specific order.
